Is Sex Necessary (in the 3by3 writing method)

I cracked myself up with that title. I could get into a heap of trouble if I wasn’t discussing writing. Ya gotta stay away from sex, religion and politics in public discussions.
But in books? Certainly CCC (constant contained conflict) is heightened by sex. Competition, tension, and just the different sides of any sexual issue can raise the conflict level within a character or a scene.
So the question really becomes is graphic sex necessary. Not in young adult, maybe in a thriller if it is plot motivated, maybe in a action adventure, certainly in a romance novel and erotic it goes without saying
Like all touchy subjects (pardon the pun) and it is the heightened tension and conflict ABOUT a subject that creates a great drama, not the deed itself.
